Wines from this wine region are generally characterized by fresh, white floral, citrus, apple, tangerine, and almond aromatics, which, depending on the production method and aging, can naturally be complemented by other notes. Although regulations allow for the blending of up to 10% of other white grape varieties into Lugana DOC wines, producers generally do not take advantage of this opportunity, so most Lugana is indeed made from 100% Turbiana. The other variety is Verdicchio (locally known as Trebbiano di Soave), a highly respected variety in the Marche region, which for a long time could not be so distinctly separated in terms of its origin.
In gastronomy, Lugana wines are primarily recommended with fish dishes and risottos, but - especially sparkling and fresher wines - can also work well as an aperitif.
