Wolfberger winery is a huge - perhaps the largest - winemaking facility in Alsace. Passing by the picturesque town of Colmar on the motorway, the enormous, futuristic building covered in black glass immediately catches the eye. Within its walls, 9-10 million bottles of traditional sparkling wine and still wine are produced each year. The inner content, however, contradicts these dimensions: they produce wine from almost all Alsatian varieties, in almost every price segment, but regularly release limited, vintage, or Grand Cru selections. We chose them precisely because they produce wines and sparkling wines in a traditional style, sometimes a bit rustic, other times appropriately youthful, and always very reliable in quality, with excellent value for money. They primarily harvest from their own vineyards and also own serious, well-established Grand Cru sites.
The Eichberg Grand Cru has been recognized since 1983, covering an area of 56 hectares, located at an altitude of 220-340 meters above sea level, approximately 6 km from the winery's central office in Colmar. Its base is Triassic limestone, which is sometimes mixed with marl. Its northern side is partially, and its western side is entirely enclosed by the Vosges mountains, which provide protection against cold air currents and storms, meaning the air temperature here is always about 1.5-2 degrees Celsius warmer than in the surrounding vineyards. This is why the raw materials harvested here result in wines with higher must weights and fuller bodies. This area is also more protected from rainfall, leading to wines with softer acidity.
The Eichberg Riesling perfectly showcases the characteristics of this Grand Cru: a rustic, perhaps somewhat reminiscent of old Alsatian wines, aged, nougat, apple pie aroma, combined with a hint of petrol. On the palate, it is full-bodied, rich, with restrained acidity and a touch of residual sugar, which perfectly suits the style. Minerality and good proportions, a medium-long finish, with potential for several years. A serious Grand Cru at an unbeatable price.
